Dr David Hamilton is passionate about gratitude diaries as much as I am that’s why I use them with all my clients to help improve their physical and mental health. Looking at how by focusing on the positives that are around us every day and by appreciating them more it can help to have a positive impact on our wellbeing.
1. It’s good for our mental health
2. It helps counter stress
3. It inspires us to exercise more
4. It helps us achieve our goals
Gratitude lists also helped people make progress towards personal goals. When you feel good you feel more motivated and more likely to spot solutions to your problems.
5. It makes us kinder
People keeping gratitude lists are more likely to help others compared to people keeping lists of annoyances. And research shows that when we are kind and help others we feel happier ourselves.
6. Makes you feel less lonely (more connected)
Making us more kind improves our relationships and empathy with other people by helping us feel more connected.
7. It helps us sleep better
Just think feeling good from thinking of good things will help release the ‘good mood’ and sleep hormone serotonin rather than thinking of stresses, which is more likely to release cortisol and adrenaline that keep you alert and awake.
8. It makes us feel more in control of your life (more optimistic)
Once we see the positive effect gratitude has on our life we begin to feel more in control and optimistic about things rather than being bogged down with events. Gratitude can even help us turn our lives around. Why not give it a go?
9. People like you better
Remember ‘perception is projection’ so what we see in others is a reflection of ourselves. So seeing good in others, means we feel better about ourselves.
10. Better Health
Have a notebook to write down things that make you feel grateful and carry it round with you everywhere. That way it encourages you to keep a note of the things that happen on a day to day basis and why you’re grateful for them. Don’t forget to include positive things about yourself too. Anything to remind you that YOU are great! You are good enough!
