Just 1 hour of exercise per week can lower your risk of getting depression.

Just one hour of exercise can make a big difference to your health

In a study, led by Dr Samuel Harvey, of 33,908 people in Norway over 11 years it was found that just doing an hour of exercise per week was enough to lower the risk of developing depression by 44%. This is a huge figure and it shows that making just a small change can have a positive impact on your health. Just getting off that bus or train stop a bit earlier or using the stairs instead of the lift can add up over time and make a real difference to your mental health.
PictureExercise has great benefits for mind and body

Interestingly Dr Harvey said that the first hour of exercise undertaken produced the greatest mental health benefits each week.
In an article in the Daily Telegraph in November last year it stated that children in the UK were the least active in the world which is shocking and something as adults we need to address, and take responsibility for to encourage our younger generation to do more physical activity.

Exercise is so good for us overall, not only is it great for the mind and a good stress buster but it also has all these additional benefits:-
Strengthens Bones and Muscles
Improves cardiovascular health
Being outside playing in nature proven to aid our immune system
Improves self confidence and self believe
Less likely to become overweight or obese
Lowers risk of developing type 2 diabetes
Helps with social skills in meeting and interacting with new friends
Promotes a positive attitude and outlook and increases confidence

There are such a wide range of different exercise classes available now there is really something for everyone as the choice is unbelievable. There are now 14 different types of yoga classes available for example and the same goes for most exercise types so there really is something for everyone. We are all different so while some prefer the high intensity workouts other prefer a slower paced one and whether you prefer to exercise together or in a group or on your own the main thing is to do something as exercise really is good for your body and mind.
Hence with sedentary lifestyles and limited time available, we really need to highlight to all that even small amounts of exercise can help us feel better mentally, so we need to encourage ourselves and others to set realistic activity goals that we can achieve to start to build this good habit and reap the benefits exercise has to offer both mentally and physically. Every little helps!
If you think that your values and beliefs are making exercise feel a big effort and a huge task to undertake than it should? Then let me help you be the person you want to be and help you overcome whatever it is that is stopping you from exercising and find the motivations and enjoyment

to exercise again in order to achieve your goals and feel great.
Is it time to make that change for you?

I have great success in helping my client’s achieve their goals in a number of different areas, by using a range of services linking mind and body such as Nutrition, Hypnotherapy, NLP, Time Line Therapy ™, Therapeutic Massage and Holistic Therapies. Get strong mentally and physically to feel your best.

National School Sport Week 26-30 June 2017

Bring back the simple way of life, walking more and hours outside in the park with friends!!.

Picture
Is this how you remember your school's sports day?!
It’s the annual National School Sports Week this week and a great way for schools to highlight the benefits of PE and school sports whether it’s a team effort or individual event.
Exercise doesn’t mean going to the gym for a work out but being active just by walking to school for example or playing tag with friends and football, skipping or tennis during lunchtime.

The national guidelines recommend children between the ages of 5-18 should be physically active (so that their heart rate increases) for at least an hour each day to strengthen their bones and muscles. The hour can be broken up during the day into intervals rather than an hour solid each day. PE, walking to school, playing games in the playground at break time and sports after school, all help to reach this target without it being a chore or them realising they are doing it. Making exercise fun is essential for children to want to do it and for it becoming part of their daily routine. Walking to school rather than jumping in the car or parking a bit further away so it becomes a way of life and something they do automatically and want to do it as it’s fun!

Exercise strengthens bones and muscles
There are endless benefits of encouraging our children to be active from an early age, the main ones are as follows:-
  1. Strengthens Bones and Muscles
  2. Improves cardiovascular health
  3. Being outside playing in nature proven to aid our immune system
  4. Improves self confidence and self believe
  5. Great for the mind and good stress buster especially if it is exam season
  6. Less likely to become overweight or obese
  7. Lowers risk of developing type 2 diabetes
  8. Helps with social skills in meeting and interacting with new friends
  9. Encourages a healthy lifestyle in adulthood
  10. Promotes a positive attitude and outlook and increases confidence
PictureAll about having fun not about 'winning'

So it is important for our children to be encouraged to ‘have a go’ and try new activities and be outside mixing with children their own age rather than inside playing with their phone or console. The innocence and fun of spending hours out playing with friends on bikes in the park seem to have vanished with our fear of their safety, our fast paced society, and trying to keep up with the never ending amount of homework put on our stressed out kids who are under pressure to perform at school and try to fit in socially and deal with changes with their bodies and hormones.

Bring back the simple pleasures of bike rides, playing rounders and going for a family walk and playing in the park with their friends’.

Enjoy getting out and about and getting stuck into nature.

Frightening Figures: Increasing numbers of obese children & adults and drop in Physical Activity! … Surely it’s Time for us all to Stand Up and Take Responsibility?

According to the International Study of Childhood Obesity, Lifestyle and the Environment (ISCOLE) conducted in 12 countries on a sample of 6,000 children, close to 30% of 10-year-old children are suffering from being overweight or obese, even with the endless weight loss diets out there and Government Health promotion.

The purpose of this study was to find out the extent of childhood obesity currently internationally, and to provide a tool to help prevent future childhood obesity. The study focused on two main points of energy balance: the relationship between intake and expenditure of calories.

A number of experts looked at the drop in the populations’ physical activity and the fact that obesity has increased. In the past, experts focused on amount of food consumed which was linked to increased body weight, but if you exercise you are likely to regulate the amount of food you eat. However, this does not work the other way round.

Unlike previous generations, we no longer have to hunt or farm in order to eat. We currently live in a society that doesn’t have to move in order to obtain food or even have to move from one place to another. This was reiterated by The World Health Organization who estimates that 63% of adults are not reaching the minimum recommended levels of physical activity, and only 20% of 11 year old girls and 30% of 11 year old boys are reporting that they engage in at least one hour of daily vigorous physical activity and the others are not! Therefore, as our eating habits have changed, we no longer need to consume as many calories because we are not as active. Robin Shook, a US researcher states, "Food intake is complemented by energy expenditure, and energy that is not expended is transformed into accumulated energy" – which is stored as fat.

In 46 countries in the European region, over 50% of the population is overweight and over 20% of the population is obese .According to these figures, global obesity has almost doubled since 1980, while the International Diabetes Federation estimates that by the year 2035, the number of diabetic adults in Europe will have risen to 68.9 million, Really shocking findings, especially as Nine out of Ten cases of Diabetes could be prevented by maintaining a  healthy lifestyle and getting the right balance between calorie intake and consumption.

Small changes like choosing low calorie meals or even better, cooking healthier, homemade meals with better portion control can make a big difference long term in maintaining weight. This together with exercise can also help to prevent Diabetes, which could well bankrupt the NHS if it continues to escalate at the rate it is doing so now.

Surely we must all take responsibility and stop blaming everyone else. We need to support those that need help and those that need help must seek this advice in return.

Sadly the NHS and most diets just focus on the food and not the mental and emotional health of the people wanting to lose weight. Being a nutritionist I have realised that the best diet in the world offers no help to a patient in the long term unless their mind set is aligned with their goals. Hence my subsequent qualifications as a Master in NLP and Hypnotherapy have really helped all my clients reach their goals much easier and more effectively than in the past.
