Eating Disorders- Not just for the young; more and more mature people are suffering too.

early intervention, the earlier someone can get help for any
eating disorder the better as they can be free of an
eating disorder and enjoy life and food again.
Admitting you have a problem is extremely hard as there is
so much secrecy that surrounds it, together with the guilt,
shame, embarrassment and the fact you don’t want to upset
or bother anyone.
An eating disorder is a mental illness and is a result of
something that is bothering you or an event that leaves
you feeling out of control, low self-worth, stressed, anxious
and/or worried. It is vital to be able to talk to someone about how you are feeling, and being allowed
to get help and support for this illness in order for you to move forward with your life.

It is NOT just young girls who suffer; you could be male,
female young or old and come from a range of
different backgrounds. It can be life threatening and needs to
be taken seriously but the good news is there is help and
support out there and you can make a full recovery and enjoy food again.
Over 725,000 men and women in the UK are affected by an
eating disorder (1) and according to a study by the
University College London 3% of women in their 40’s and 50’s have experienced an eating disorder (2). Shocking figures but not surprising as I have mature clients with eating disorders who feel unheard and unsupported by the system as they feel it is all aimed towards the
younger generation which stops some from seeking help earlier.

disorders in later life are divorce, children’s
happiness, parents being ill or dying, sexual
abuse surfacing and many other life events. Anyone
at any stage of their life can get an eating
disorder and all are important and deserve to
be supported.
The great thing about this awareness week is just
that, to raise awareness of eating disorders and that they don’t just affect the younger generation and
for us all to spot the signs and encourage people to seek help professionally, with compassion and
without judgement.
Mental illness – let’s keep talking about it and support each other.
