It found that drinking diet drinks helped people lose more weight than those people who drank water, even though both groups followed the same diet and did the same amount of exercise. This contradicts the other school of thinking and other studies on “Diet” Drinks.
Over 12 weeks 303 people took part in the trial, with half the group drinking water and the other half drinking Low & No Calorie Sweetened (LNCS) beverages. Both groups followed an identical diet & exercise programme. The study concluded that those who drank the diet beverages lost an average of 13lbs, 44% more than the group who drank water who lost 9lbs. The group who drank the LNCS beverages also found they were less hungry than the water control group.
64% of the LNCS beverage group lost at least 5% of their body weight compared with only 43% of the water control group. Losing just 5% of your body weight can significantly improve your health, including lowering the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, Type 2 diabetes, some cancers, among others.
As well as losing more weight, the LNCS group found that they didn’t feel as hungry as the other group, they showed greater improvements in serum levels of Total Cholesterol and low density lipoprotein (LDL) and a reduction in serum triglycerides.
Both groups saw a reduction in their waist circumference and blood pressure.
This study suggests that Low and No Calorie Sweetened Drinks can help with weight loss which in turn has great health benefits too.
Love to hear what you tend to drink? Sugar sweetened Drinks, Low or no cal drinks, juices or good old fashioned water and why?
