Irritable Bowel is one of the most common health problems related to the gastrointestinal tract, with 10-20% of the UK population suffering from this extremely uncomfortable condition. However it is expected that even more people with the condition suffer in silence so the numbers are likely to be much higher.
Symptoms vary to each individual, as does the cause, however in many cases it can be extremely debilitating and reduces the quality of life for many suffering with it.
Because of the individual causes of this disorder, doctors are often dismissive about the condition, as unsure how to tackle it best.
Research - Mind and Body
Research from the top Gastroenterologists and Clinical Psychologists, show that there must be a multi-disciplinary approach, to include the use of dietary intervention and also helping to tackle a patients mindset. Hypnotherapy has been found to be a very effective way of dealing with IBS, according to a study in the American Journal of Gastroenterology.
In fact, more than three-quarters (78%) of the 250 study participants reported improvements in their bowel habit, or stool frequency and consistency, after they underwent hypnotherapy.
Extracolonic symptoms reported by the patients, such as lethargy, body pains, backache, and urinary symptoms improved after hypnotherapy. The therapy also reportedly improved the patients’ quality of life and reduced their anxiety and depression."
